Demystifying the chip details of the first ARM architecture Snapdragon A1100

October 02, 2020

Abstract: As early as January this year at the San Jose Open Computing Summit, AMD launched its first ARM-based server processor: the Opteron A1100 series, code-named "Seattle." Until recently, at the Hot Chips conference in Cupertino, California, AMD announced more details about the new series.

AMD announces the details of the first ARM architecture Snapdragon A1100 chip

A1100

The Opteron A1100 series chips are clearly different from other Opteron series products. The former is a complete system-on-chip (SoC), not a CPU, and has a complete functional design. The SoC systems we usually see are mostly used in mobile devices, such as Tablets and smartphones, and AMD's new chip is used in the server space.

The second difference is that the Opteron A1100 series is based on the ARM core architecture of the ARM architecture, rather than the common x86 architecture, and its core design is entirely derived from ARM technology. To be precise, the core architecture of the Opteron A1100 series is the Cortex-A57, a quad-core design that supports 64-bit computing.

For technical support, the Opteron A1100 has a default frequency of 2GHz, consumes less than 20W, has 4MB of L2 cache and 8MB of L3 cache, supports ECC memory, supports dual DDR3 or DDR4 (1866 MHz) memory channels, and supports up to 128GB of dual-channel memory with four SODIMM, UDIMM, or RDIMM package modules supporting up to eight SATA 3.0 Gbps interfaces, eight PCI Express 3.0 slots, and dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

In order to provide a development environment, AMD has specially prepared a development kit. The two main things are the Opteron A1100 series chip and the designed micro-ATX motherboard. The suite of development kits also includes the pache web server, the MySQL database engine, and the PHP scripting language for developing robust web service applications, Java 7 and Java 8 versions of the ARM environment, as well as UEFI BIOS and Linux operating systems and drivers.

On the hardware side of the kit, there are 2 sets of 16 GB DDR3 memory on the motherboard, PCI Express interface (x8 or 2 x4), 8 SATA interfaces, standard power interface, PCI Express interface, standard UEFI boot environment, Linux environment, etc. . The A1100 also includes a Cortex A5 auxiliary processor that controls power management, starts the computer, and recalls the initial configuration.

The announcement of the Opteron A1100 series of chips and the introduction of the development kit did not bring any low pricing information. Since the series focuses on the server, AMD has given a full development kit a quote of $2,999, which is equivalent to the initial sale of the Mac Pro. price.

Golbal Patent Technology

Our new technology is still ESP technology, but with non-metallic electrodes,it uses the principle of higher resitivity alloy negative electrode junction plastic ionized air.The higher resistivity is relatively high, the distance between the poles can do much smaller without causing breakdown;with the same volume,it can provide considerable absorption area to increase CADR.
