How does home color affect mood?

October 31, 2020

The reason why we see the colorful color is that the light shining on the object is reflected into the eyeball, which is triggered by the three cones reacting in the retina. In fact, in the light waves that illuminate the object, we only react to light of a certain wavelength (see left). But only such a small range of light waves can be perceived by humans and distinguishes up to 1 million colors (see Figure 1 right). From an evolutionary perspective, we have such a developed color perception system that we must show that color must have an important role in our existence and life. What are the impacts of being in a million colors?

Although the color does not speak, it never lacks symbolic meaning. The Chinese have been free to use yellow in the last 100 years, and the official order can be directly reflected from the color of the clothes. "Jiangzhou Sima Qingyi Wet" uses a "green" character to tangibly and deliberately see that a talented person has been detained to the loneliness of the nine products. People's feelings about color are not all "legal and can be relied upon". There are often commonalities in different cultures, such as white symbolizing purity, red heart symbolizing love, yellow needing attention. It seems that these colors have a common humanity behind them. Color password. Some even put forward the concept of "color quotient", trying to gain an insight into the inner state through people's preferences for different colors. People who like red are passionate? People who like blue are calm and relaxed? Or is it red that makes people passionate? Blue makes people calm and relaxed? Psychologists are more willing to experiment with the relationship.

Red office

In the past 40 years of environmental psychology and ergonomics research, two groups of researchers from Lund University in Sweden and Cambridge University in the UK have conducted in-depth research on this issue. The researchers allowed the same experimental participants to stay in the red and blue rooms for two and a half hours, respectively, with a two-week interval. As the study progresses, they complete an assessment of their current mood, write a story about what the room reminds them, and finally measure their brain activity in a quiet state. It turned out that although there was no significant difference in emotional state in different rooms, the stories they wrote were longer in the red room. In the EEG results, in the blue room, the delta wave (which is a brainwave that often occurs when we sleep and sleepy) is more active than in the red room; alpha waves (when we are awake) Brainwaves are larger in the red room. And as the time spent by participants in the room increases, this difference continues to increase. The heartbeat is slower in the red room. It seems that different room colors really cause physiological changes.

Purple cafe

In addition to the obvious physiological changes, different colors of the environment will make us feel different. Let's take a look at an interesting study from Turkey. They moved the lab to a coffee shop. The researchers first collected data on all aspects of the diners in a yellow-colored cafe, which included a coffee shop. Whether the appearance (fashion or not), space (spaciousness or not) and emotions (quietness is calm or not), these evaluations are not systematic, but they also examine our overall perception of the coffee space. They then painted the cafes in purple and collected data on the diners in the same café with the same layout but different wall colors. It was found that the evaluations in the purple cafes were slightly better than the yellow cafes. Participants felt that the purple cafe was more spacious, stylish, fun, and beautiful, although it was cool but gave a calmer feeling.

Colorful home

The color settings of work (such as office) and commercial (cafe) environments are often for higher efficiency and better efficiency. We may not like it. Imagine how many people really like their study is red? Studies have confirmed that people's favorite colors are: blue, green, purple, orange and yellow. So what color would you choose if you were to arrange your own home?

Another group of Turkish researchers really did such an investigation. The researchers interviewed 50 participants, first let them evaluate the color given to them, and then let them talk about the color of their living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen and other home space. In their 41 color (see photo), the participants chose pink (31) for the bedroom, and thought that the color was more romantic, happy and warm; the living room was blue (No. 40). It represents relaxed, calm and modern; yellow (21st and 32nd) is chosen as the color of the restaurant, which is considered to give a simple and flat feeling; for spaces such as kitchens, washrooms and aisles, people generally It tends to use white, mostly for cleanliness.

Warm and self-aware

But can local research from Turkey be applied to other parts of the world? We have to admit the existence of individual differences, but the difference is not that huge. The evaluation of color emotions gives us evidence in this regard. The researchers asked 219 species of colors from the UK, Japan, Thailand, China, and Hong Kong to evaluate the cold, warm, light/heavy, positive/negative, and soft/hard latitudes. The evaluation is highly relevant. Combining several findings in this area, yellow is generally considered to be the most active and active, with the darkest gray; the blackest is the thickest, the pink is the lightest; the red is of course the warmest, and the blue-purple is the coldest. In addition, in different color combinations, people generally like clean and harmonious colors. Therefore, in general, you feel good and comfortable colors, others will feel good and comfortable.

As stated in the opening paragraph, the finite light waves visible to us by the naked eye are simply too many colors. It is impossible for researchers to exhaust all possible colors, not to mention the endless combination of colors and the brightness and saturation associated with color perception. But the evolutionary influence of the basic color, such as "wearing red can win more games", is an indisputable fact. Future research will inevitably refine more colors and refine their influence on the different functions of our body and mind.

In short, in the color, how can we not move it?
