MMPA+FBAR technology solution, the key to China's smartphone maker Nuggets overseas

October 29, 2020

“The sea is wide and the fish is flying, and the sky is high.” After the domestic smart phone manufacturers have experienced the rapid reshuffle of the industry in the past three to five years, the market structure has been determined and the competition environment is bad. The bottom line, no-fashion" to describe the cruelty of the domestic mobile phone market. The sense of smell of businessmen is always the most sensitive. They turn their eyes quickly to profitable overseas markets. Many small and medium-sized emerging brands are going overseas and are developing well.

The world is big and the world is ours. A new generation of domestic mobile phone manufacturers that are seeking “fishing in the sea” have a consensus: if they can gain some shares in the European and American markets, they almost represent their own global competitiveness. However, Chinese brand mobile phones that are popular in the European and American markets are rare, especially in the United States, where the threshold is higher.

“In fact, in recent years, Apple and Samsung have cultivated a good manufacturing chain and supply chain in China. The mobile phones made in China are very beautiful and are very popular among overseas users. The most typical example is the successful development of emerging brands in Europe. In the higher North American market, ZTE’s sales share in the US mobile phone market has risen from 4% last year to nearly 8%, ranking fourth, which is the beginning of the Chinese mobile phone icebreaking North American market.” Anwaro ( Cheng Xu, Marketing Manager of Shiqiang Microwave Communications Group, China's core agent, Avago Technologies.

MMPA integrating more frequency bands is the key to designing universal terminals

With the demonstration effect of these “going out” mobile phone manufacturers, a large number of small and medium-sized local mobile phone manufacturers are also targeting overseas markets. However, whether it is exporting overseas or branding its own brand, it will face the challenge of high quality requirements for overseas users, especially those in Europe and North America. These users will bring many technical challenges in the pursuit of the ultimate performance of the product, for example, global roaming, ultra-thin body, long standby... These all put more demanding requirements on the mobile phone manufacturers' engineering and technical personnel.

“We face many challenges, as bandwidth is getting wider and wider, frequencies are getting higher and higher, PA's efficiency and even heat dissipation will be a problem. Our goal is to solve the problem of inconsistent frequency bands, but also to make smart Mobile phone designers can design a global universal terminal that can support enough frequency bands on a limited PCB area, Cheng Cheng said.

Trends in technology evolution of smartphones

Figure 1. Trends in technology evolution for smartphones.

As shown in Figure 1 above, the technology evolution trend of smart phones, LTE has been vigorously developed on a global scale, but because LTE requires a large number of frequency bands, this will be a big challenge for RF front-end devices such as PA.

In addition, the smartphone battery occupies a lot of space, and the inside of the phone is mostly a battery, and the rest is a PCB. And 30 to 40% of the PCB is the front-end RF area. Mobile phones will not grow indefinitely, but the number of frequency bands is increasing, and the space available for use is becoming more and more limited. So we need to integrate the space so that we can add more filters and duplexers for the required frequency bands for roaming. This is the role of the Avago high-multi-mode multi-frequency power amplifier ACPM-7717: to provide integration and release board area for more frequency bands.

A new generation of multi-mode multi-frequency PA, a tool to expand overseas markets

“The Avago ACPM-7717 multimode multi-frequency power amplifier that was just launched recently is very suitable for Chinese local smartphone manufacturers to expand overseas markets, especially for Europe, North America and Singapore.” Cheng Xu further pointed out that “although Huagao's mobile phone power amplifier is still relatively unfamiliar to Chinese mobile phone manufacturers. The reason is that Avago’s mobile phone PA is mainly aimed at Europe and North America. For example, from iPhone4S to today’s iPhone6, every generation of Apple mobile phones has Avago’s RF front-end chips, not only that, but in Samsung's various mobile phones, you will also see the Avago chip."

He said that in order to better help Chinese local manufacturers to expand overseas markets, Shiqiang, as one of Avago’s core agents, has the responsibility and ability to bring Avago’s most advanced mobile power amplifier technology to local mobile phone manufacturers in China.

Avago’s high-modulo multi-band power amplifiers support different operating modes (CDMA, UMTS, LTE, and GSM/EDGE) and multiple frequency bands in ultra-small packages and provide excellent performance for smartphones. As shown in Figure 2 below, Avago offers a broad portfolio of multimode multiband power amplifiers for smartphone applications. They all use ultra-small 5x7mm packages to provide high linearity, low distortion and high efficiency RF front-end solutions for thousands of smartphones.

And its latest ACPM-7717 is a quad-band GSM/EDGE and multi-mode B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B8/B17 (20, 28) power amplifiers, adding support for B17, B20, B28, especially suitable for owning Chinese mobile phone manufacturers with overseas operations. As shown in Figure 3 below, it is the product characteristic of ACPM-7717.

The ACPM-7717 supports the MIPI interface with an output power of up to 28dBm, an efficiency of 50 in high gain mode, and an amplifier gain of 27.5dB. Built-in 50ohm impedance matching on the input and output, no external DC module and bypass capacitor, no external constant voltage source, and CMOS digital control universal pin compatible. The 5.0x7.0x0.9mm SMT package saves board space. In addition, the ACPM-7717 is manufactured using state-of-the-art InGaP HBT technology to provide high power added efficiency, good temperature stability and durability.

FBAR filter technology is also essential

Especially worth mentioning is Avago's FBAR (Fiber Bulk Acoustic Resonator) filtering technology. “FBAR technology has become mainstream. When most applications were 3G technology four years ago, only 4 to 5 different frequency bands benefited from the use of FBAR filtering technology.” Cheng Xu said, “As global telecommunications companies gradually introduce 4G/LTE services The requirements for filter specifications have become more stringent, so in many applications, FBAR filters have become the best solution to meet the requirements."

FBAR filters provide solutions for increasingly crowded 3G and 4G spectrum

Figure 4. The FBAR filter provides a solution for the increasingly crowded 3G and 4G spectrum.

Mobile phones that support high-speed LTE voice and data transmission are currently accelerating the use of Avago's FBAR technology to solve difficult filtering problems. Mobile phones with 4G/LTE capabilities are usually in close proximity to existing radio services. The newly allocated spectrum operates and therefore often faces possible interference between services.

The steep filter curve based on the FBAR technology filter and excellent out-of-band rejection can help modern smartphones operate in crowded spectrum and avoid interference that may affect or even disrupt data transmission. In addition, the low loss characteristics of the FBAR filter can compensate for the higher loss of multiple frequency bands integrated in the RF front-end, improving signal reception and battery life.

For example, Band 7, one of Europe's major LTE deployment bands, requires FBAR filter technology to improve the operation of smartphones. The reason is that the 2600MHz Band 7 is close to the upper edge of the European WiFi service frequency. WiFi is a service that often operates simultaneously with 4G/LTE. If you use a smartphone as a WiFi hotspot, there is no excellent filtering capability, and the WiFi transceiver may be used by Band. The LTE signal transmission on 7 is interrupted or interfered.

FBAR filters can deliver better performance for smartphones operating in the US, 700MHz, and AWS spectrum or higher, while handsets operating in Europe's major LTE deployment bands can also benefit from the new Asian TD-LTE band and The same is true for the FDD band, and even support for radio systems such as GPS and WiFi. As the challenges of new filtering technologies continue to emerge, FBAR technology as a solution to these questions is gaining popularity.

"Anwarco's most advantageous FBAR filtering technology combined with its high-performance MMPA provides strong technical support for Chinese smartphones to expand overseas markets. With competitors' solutions, it is necessary to match a single frequency band for overseas markets. PA, this will increase the PCB area, making the overall cost increase." Cheng Xu pointed out.

Summary of this article

Mobile phones are getting smaller and smaller, and the high integration of mobile phone power amplifiers is now and in the future. Increasing frequency bands make the spectrum more and more crowded, integrating all frequency bands into one power amplifier (PA), and ensuring good linearity and low noise, which is a challenge for current PA manufacturers. Fortunately, Avago’s most advantageous FBAR technology combined with its high-performance MMPA can solve this challenge. In the future, Anwarco's MMPA is expected to integrate FBAR filters, and mobile phones will become lighter and more power efficient.
