Recently, ON Semiconductor introduced the multi-channel LED driver NCP1840, which can drive up to 8 LEDs independently using any lighting pattern created by the user. Engineers using the NCP1840 can save some of the work normally handled by processors in their system design, because the processor no longer needs to directly control individual LEDs. The current and dimming degree programming can be conveniently performed by writing a register or reading a register through a serial interface that uniformly controls the brightness and flicker rate of each LED. The degree of LED brightness can be controlled in a logarithmic and non-linear fashion so that there is no brightness distortion in the naked eye.
The device is designed for portable applications due to the use of an energy-efficient, low-noise, four-mode charge pump that extends battery life. The charge pump and constant current regulator maintain the LED forward voltage and operating state even when the input voltage fluctuates. The NCP1840 also saves space by requiring only five small ceramic capacitors and one resistor to form a complete LED power supply and current controller.
The device is available in a lead-free, RoHS-compliant 4 mm x 4 mm QFN-20 package and supports an operating temperature range of -40 0C to +85 0C for industrial, computer and consumer end markets. The NCP1840 is priced at $0.94 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities.
