Apple's OLED patent report shows that although OLEDs have advantages over LCDs in some respects, including more natural black, high contrast ratios and low power consumption. But these advantages of OLEDs are reduced when a large amount of white is displayed. In response to the above problems, Apple proposed a solution to add a white background layer, such as a white semi-transparent film, behind the special OLED display panel. A switching layer is added between the OLED panel and the background layer. The switching layer can be turned on in whole or in part, switching from an opaque or translucent state to a translucent or transparent state. This way of combining the white background layer with the opacity allows the transparent OLED panel to avoid displaying white.
