What is the Qualcomm emergency stop smart TV dedicated processor 骁 802?

August 13, 2020

At the CES 2014 Consumer Electronics Show held in January this year, Qualcomm officially released the latest Snapdragon 802 processor. This is a chip specifically developed for smart TV products and is expected to be commercially available by the end of this year. However, this week, Qualcomm held a press conference and officially announced its decision to stop production and sales of the Snapdragon 802 processor. The specific reason is that the company has overestimated the market demand for this chip. It’s only been 5 weeks since the release of this processor.

"Qualcomm Technologies decided to officially stop the commercialization of the recently announced Snapdragon 802 processor, and the overall demand performance of the market is not as strong as the company had originally estimated," said Jon Carvill, senior public relations executive at Qualcomm. "This decision to discontinue production is limited to the Snapdragon 802 product, and will not affect the production and sales of other chips."

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 802 processor is a processor specifically designed for mobile products like the previous Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 805. It is based on the Qualcomm Krait architecture, has a 1.8GHz quad-core CPU, adds 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi modules and has an Adreno 330 GPU built in to support 4K video playback. In addition, this new product is also very powerful in audio processing, supporting Hexagon DSP Dolby digital signal and DTS surround sound decoding. Although the Snapdragon 802 was positioned as a new product developed specifically for smart TVs at the time of its release, it was too close to the existing products of existing major users such as Snapdragon 800 and 805, such as smartphones and tablets. Not quite satisfactory.

It was a surprise that the Snapdragon 802 processor was announced to be cancelled only five weeks after its release. Usually, the development cycle of a chip is not too short, and some even take two to three years. The plan that Snapdragon 802 was originally scheduled to be released in early 2014 and put into commercial use before the end of the year must have been carefully considered by the company. To know that if the market demand is not enough, resulting in poor sales, then Qualcomm should find problems early in the development phase.

Therefore, some industry experts believe that the current development of smart TV is good, and does not conflict with 4K TV. And Qualcomm decided to give up the Snapdragon 802 processor in addition to the market expectations are too high, it may be that this product has certain deficiencies and defects that led TV manufacturers do not buy. Therefore, in addition to the familiar areas of smartphones and tablets, Qualcomm still has a lot to go in the new smart TV field.
