Research says LTE data traffic will grow 207% this year

The company said that global mobile data traffic reached 13,412 petabytes in 2012, with 3G accounting for 46% of total traffic.

"In mature markets, 4G is rapidly gaining traction." Marina Lu, research assistant at ABI Research, said in a statement. "For example, Verizon Wireless has reported that 50% of its data usage occurs on 4G LTE networks."

ABI said that this growth is driven by smartphone applications. Last year, global app downloads were 36.2 billion, an increase of 88% from 2011. However, this is not just about downloads, but more important is the amount of data generated while using the app.

In addition, some applications pose a threat to the core revenue of telecom operators, such as VoIP applications, which can simultaneously open a new channel between service providers and their users.

Although mobile applications may be the biggest driver of data usage this year, ABI Research said that by 2018, "large mobile terminal screens and 4G data speeds will stimulate mobile video data streaming / downloading to account for 56% of all mobile data traffic."
