Renesas Electronics launches a suite of highly automated driving solutions to facilitate the development of autonomous vehicles

August 11, 2021

Tokyo, Japan, October 19, 2016 - Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), the world's leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced the availability of a suite of highly automated driving (HAD) solutions. This kit provides high computing performance for automotive safety and reduces development time for electronic control units (ECUs). The HAD Solution Suite is based on two Renesas Electronics R-Car H3 Starter Kit Premier and Automotive Control RH850 / P1H-C Microcontrollers (MCUs), thus complying with ISO 26262 ASIL-B Functional Safety Standards and ISO 26262 ASIL-D Standards (Note 1). The new solution suite enables system developers to immediately evaluate features and software in an environment similar to the actual development of the ECU, reducing the time and effort required for developers to migrate software to the actual ECU.

The automotive market is rapidly evolving in the direction that end users can use highly automated driving functions by 2020. However, this goal is extremely challenging because autonomous driving level 3 and above (Note 2) requires high computing power while ensuring safety and ensuring quality. In the early days of automated driving system development, OEM and TIer-1 system developers first created prototype systems and tested them using a PC. In order for the prototype system to match the actual vehicle, it must have low power consumption and high performance, operate at high temperatures and meet specific standards such as functional safety and system specifications. Therefore, the process of loading a newly developed system into an actual vehicle is extremely challenging.

Renesas Electronics' HAD Solution Suite supports TIer-1 and OEM software development and software verification for automotive ECUs. It is integrated into a rugged enclosure with multiple interfaces, similar to an actual automotive ECU, with a rich connectivity.

Key features of the new HAD solution suite: (1) Powerful HAD solution suite to accelerate software development for mass production ECUs required for autonomous driving

The solution suite maintains a high level of safety and quality while providing the high computing power required for autonomous driving. It is capable of connecting Renesas Electronics' two market-proven R-Car H3 System-on-Chip (SoC) Starter Kits and RH850 P1H-C MCUs via a vehicle-mounted high-speed interface and uses multiple external interfaces (eg CAN-FD, FlexRay) And Ethernet) are connected to peripherals.

The solution suite simplifies software development for production ECUs by evaluating development using the HAD solution suite in the vehicle. Thanks to its rugged and compact housing design, it can be tested in the laboratory and in test drives that meet the requirements of the car. These test drives are very demanding in terms of operating temperature, low power consumption and small size.

(2) Compliance with high functional safety standards: based on the ISO 26262 ASIL-B dual R-Car H3 starter kit and ISO 26262 ASIL-D compliant RH850/P1H-C MCU

The R-Car H3 Starter Kit Premier is based on the R-Car H3, a high-end, high-performance system-on-chip designed for automotive applications. Based on the ARM® Cortex®-A57 / A53 core, this system-on-chip can be used as an automotive computing platform solution for driving safety support systems and in-vehicle infotainment systems with over 40,000 DMIPS (Dhrystone million instructions per second (Note 3)) Process performance to increase processing power. R-Car H3 also complies with the ISO 26262 ASIL-B standard.

In addition, the R-Car H3 is equipped with ImaginaTIon Technologies' PowerVR® GX6650, a powerful graphics processing unit (GP-GPU) core, and the Renesas Electronics IMP-X5 with the best structure for machine vision and deep learning. The parallel programming kernel enables advanced arithmetic processing required for autonomous driving.

The RH850/P1H-C is a high-end safety MCU with a built-in hardware security module (HSM) that complies with the ISO 26262 ASIL-D safety standard. The MCU integrates high-capacity memory, a high-performance CPU capable of processing 1,344 DMIPS, and rich communication network communication functions on a single chip. Therefore, the RH850/P1H-C maintains a high level of safety and ensures quality.

(3) Multiple interfaces for developing automated driving systems and built-in data logging

The development of an automated driving system is a continuous process that requires the collection and analysis of test data in an environment where various sensors are connected, thus requiring high bandwidth capability. The HAD Solution Suite supports multiple interfaces including five 100 megabit (MB) Ethernet Broad R-Reach ports, 1 Gigabit (GB) Ethernet, Controller Area Network (CAN) with CAN-FD and FlexRay.

In addition, up to 16 camera inputs are available, allowing direct connection and image processing via R-Car H3. Multi-interfaces reserve space for connecting next-generation applications, combining data from surround cameras with pre-processed objects from lidar, radar and front camera to provide a comprehensive and accurate view of the vehicle's surroundings for a safer driving experience .

In addition to data logging, it also features solid state drive (SSD) support and a USB 3.0 connection to record test drive data. It also provides high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output for visualization.

The new kit solution also includes Renesas Electronics' Linux Yocto-based R-Car H3 board support package and the software required for the RH850 / P1H-C. Partners will provide additional software to enable system developers to further increase development efficiency.

Supply

Samples of the HAD Solution Kit are scheduled for delivery in February 2017. (The availability is subject to change without notice.)

For the main specifications of the HAD solution kit, please refer to the spec sheet (PDF: 306 KB).

(Note 1) ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level):

Each level specifies the requirements of the ISO 26262 functional safety standard and safety measures to circumvent unacceptable residual risks. There are four security levels from A to D, of which ASIL-D is the most demanding.

(Note 2) Autopilot can be measured by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vehicle automation level (Level 0 to Level 4).

Level 3 (Limited Autopilot Automation) means that the vehicle performs all acceleration, steering and braking unless the system has requested the pilot to take over. At level 4 (automatic driving automation), the vehicle acts as a fully automated driving system and the driver does not participate at all.

(Note 3) DMIPS (Dhrystone Million Commands/sec): An operational performance index calculated using the Dhrystone benchmark program.
