Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (HIL): Key to NI's leading automotive test

January 14, 2021

September 17, 2015 — NaTIonal Instruments (NI) recently participated in the 2015 Automotive Testing and Quality Control Expo held at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center. At the expo, NI and a number of industry partners focused on NI's flexible open test platform and diverse solutions for the automotive industry.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (HIL): Key to NI's leading automotive test

2015 marks the tenth year of the Automotive Testing and Quality Control Expo, and it has been established as the industry's number one exhibition to showcase the technologies, services and services that ensure quality, reliability, durability and safety to the Chinese automotive industry. More than 280 companies presented their new products in specific areas including: engine/exhaust testing; vehicle dynamics testing; material testing and crash testing. NI also demonstrated the technological advantages and quality solutions of NI in the automotive industry to the company and the public.

It is understood that almost all automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers today use or integrate NI products in various test applications. By providing a common platform for control, design, and testing, NI helps users save money and time spent on all phases of automotive R&D to production. With industry-leading I/O, flexible off-the-shelf hardware, and a powerful and efficient LabVIEW development environment, users can create solutions for a wide range of applications. At present, NI products in the automotive industry involve automotive testing and data logging, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, bench testing and control, rapid control prototyping, production line testing, and in-vehicle infotainment system testing.

At the expo, NI highlighted its industry-leading hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) technology. NI helps engineers and scientists design and build their own HIL systems through their innovative low-cost modular hardware and software platforms. The hardware-in-the-loop HIL simulation technology can use the NI PXI real-time controller to run simulation models to simulate the running state of the controlled object. The NI FPGA module can be adapted to higher dynamic characteristics and higher precision model application requirements. The NI hardware-in-the-loop test platform has an open hardware and software architecture that reduces engineer development time, cost, and risk. While supporting third-party hardware and software modeling tools, NI also offers a range of high-performance analog and digital I/O devices, CAN, LIN, and FlexRay bus interfaces, fault-injection hardware and other hardware to enable customers to efficiently implement applications. Based on open industry standards, users can always use the latest PC technology in their own HIL test system. At the same time, the scalability of the HIL test system meets a variety of rapidly changing needs to adapt to the testing challenges brought by the development of new technologies, such as current new energy vehicles and ADAS.

The co-exhibition of Hengrun Technology is one of the many partners in the NI industry. The engine controller (EMS) hardware loop (HIL) test system they developed is based on flexible open NI hardware and software. The EMS HIL test system builds a complete "virtual vehicle" test environment that enables EMS verification during development and automated testing of EMS using NI TestStand software. This test system benefits from the openness and stability of the NI hardware platform and the flexibility of the VeriStand and TestStand software systems, shortening the product development cycle, and comprehensively testing and verifying the functions of the EMS during the development process. In addition, the system is widely used in the automotive industry, many automakers, parts manufacturers and models and product development process.

NI has been developing flexible, high-performance products for the automotive industry for many years, and its open platform covers the entire process from prototype construction to production testing. China has now become the world's largest auto market, and China is also their main R&D and production base for major international automotive electronics suppliers. The automotive industry has become one of NI China's key customer markets. NI is confident in China's automotive electronics industry market and will continue to provide more sophisticated and cutting-edge technology solutions to the needs and application direction of industry users.
