Vizio pushes 120-inch HDR TV at comparable price to BMW

January 21, 2021

Vizio’s Reference series of TV makers is scheduled to be available before the end of this year. The high-end TV series has huge screens and the latest imaging technology. The price is comparable to that of BMW.

Vizio's products have always been known for their great value for money, but the Reference series runs counter to the company's previous styles. The 120-inch models are priced at US$129999 (approximately RMB826,261) while the 65-inch models are priced at US$5,999. (38,129 yuan).

The Reference series of products debuted at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show, but no actual products have been available.

So how is Vizio going to convince consumers to accept such a high price? It is reported that, in addition to the huge 120-inch screen size, the key factor is that this model TV is the first product to support Dolby Vision HDR.

HDR video can provide higher picture quality, mainly in brighter and more realistic highlight scenes, more real colors and other improvements. It is widely expected that this technology is the most promising imaging technology since 4K, because 4K's focus is on resolution or picture clarity rather than on contrast or color. It is often difficult to find the difference between 4K and today's Full HD video, but the difference between HDR and HD video is clear.

Dolby has formed an exclusive partnership with Vizio and plans to provide Dolby Vision's first films through Vudu streaming services, including "Lego Movie", "Tomorrow's Edge" and "Superman: The Iron Man."

Vizio also said that more films supporting Dolby Vision will appear on the TV through the Netflix service and specifically mention the "Marco Polo" series. Vizio did not mention whether to support Amazon's HDR video in the news release. The latter's service has been supported by Samsung, LG and Sony TV.

Both TVs launched by Vizio have 4K resolution. They are 65-inch R65-B2 and 120-inch RS120-B3. The HDR screen is responsible for up to 384 areas of the full-array local dimming backlight module with a peak brightness of 800 nits. Vizio specifically emphasized that the series had a wider color gamut, but did not indicate how broad the word was, and the flashing of its words seemed to imply that the series did not meet its original claim to the Rec 2020 standard.

For gamers, the 120fps refresh rate and "extremely low latency" make this product an alternative to PC monitors.

The 65-inch model uses an LCD panel with quantum dot technology, while a 120-inch TV does not have the same performance. Quantum dot technology is believed to improve color reproduction and brightness, appearing on products such as Samsung SUHD.

Speaking of SUHD, I have to mention Samsung’s JS9500, another HDR-equipped TV that is said to achieve a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. The product also uses full array local dimming technology, but the number of specific regions is not disclosed, and can achieve 93% to 95% of the color in the P3 color gamut. This is also a curved TV, currently priced at $3,500 (22,246 yuan), which is significantly lower than the price of the 65-inch model that Vizio plans to launch.

Also worth mentioning is LG's 65-inch OLED model, which includes the curved EG9600 and flat panel 65EF9500, which are also priced lower than Vizio's. For now, OLED presents better picture quality than LED LCD technology, which is being adopted by Vizio and Samsung's products. Of course, the Reference series may reverse this unfavorable situation.

In addition to picture quality, the Reference series also offers some unique audio features. This 120-inch TV does not provide any speakers. Vizio believes that the target user of the product will use a separate sound system. The 65-inch model offers a detachable bar sound, a pair of surround speakers and a low-frequency unit. Vizio said that the audio performance of this series of products must surpass any existing TV products.

Exaggeration is true, and it will be clear when the Reference series arrives during the year.
