LED driver power engineer recommends ten easy to use IC

March 26, 2020

There is an old saying in China that "the Jinbei silver cup is not as good as the people's reputation!" In the IC field, this sentence also applies. A product is good, don't look at how its advertising is so exciting, and see the engineers use it. Practice the truth! This article will sort out some of the easy-to-use LED driver ICs recommended by engineers.
Recommended 1: MAX16832A Buck Constant Current High Brightness LED Driver
Key characteristics
Input voltage range is 6.5V to 65V
Output current up to 1A
On-chip integrated 65V, 0.45Ω power MOSFET
Hysteresis control: switching frequency up to 2MHz
LED current accuracy: ±3%
200mV current check reference
Resistor programmable constant LED current
Integrated high-side current sensing
Thermal foldback protection / linear brightness adjustment
Thermal shutdown protection
Available in a thermally enhanced 8-pin SO package
-40°C to +125°C operating temperature range
The MAX16832A/MAX16832C are step-down, constant-current, high-brightness LED (HBLED) drivers that provide a cost-effective solution for automotive interior/exterior lighting, architectural and ambient lighting, LED bulbs, and other LED lighting applications.
The MAX16832A/MAX16832C operate from a +6.5V to +65V input voltage range and provide up to 700mA of output current over a temperature range of +125°C and 1A of output current up to +105°C. The high-side current-sense resistor regulates the output current, while the dedicated pulse-width modulation (PWM) input enables pulsed LED brightness adjustment over a wide range of brightness.
These devices are ideal for applications that require a wide input voltage range. High-side current sensing and built-in current setting circuitry reduce external component count and provide an average output current of ±3% accuracy. The hysteretic control algorithm guarantees excellent input supply rejection and fast response performance during load transients and PWM dimming. The MAX16832A allows 10% current ripple, while the MAX16832C allows 30% current ripple. Both devices feature switching frequencies up to 2MHz, allowing the use of small form factor components.
The MAX16832A/MAX16832C provide analog dimming to reduce output current by applying an external DC voltage below TEMP_I to GND that is less than the internal 2V threshold voltage. TEMP_I also sources a 25μA current to a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor connected between TEMP_I and GND, providing an analog thermal foldback function that reduces the LED current when the temperature of the LED string exceeds a specified temperature. In addition, the device features thermal shutdown protection.
The MAX16832A/MAX16832C operate over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range and are available in a thermally enhanced 8-pin SO package.
Application range
Architectural, industrial and environmental lighting
Automotive RCL, DRL and fog lights
Flat panel display
Indicator lights and emergency lights
MR16 and MR111LED lights
